Aaron Roth, S.O.B Sobranie London, 2020
oil canvas, 130 x 180 cm

My work looks at how objects and meanings emigrate, coming together to form new symbols through the post-digital space from west to east. I use paintings and objects as a way to interrogate and play with these things.

The painting “S.O.B. Sobranie London” made in 2021 and exhibited at the FLUCA pavilion as part of “At Liberty with the Time Fame”. is based on an advertisement. Sobranie cigarettes which have not been sold in the UK for years were once marketed as Russian-style cigarettes there but in Bulgaria are marketed as “Sobranie London”. In the painting, the letters flow us across this desert or sea that only exists due to regulations surrounding cigarette advertising providing a space to be reframed and re-analyzed.
